I know that, at times, it can be easy to question the worthiness of
the ham radio SkyWARN program in the age of social media. I'll be
honest, sometimes I think about this too. And fortunately, we
haven't had a lot of work to do in the last couple years.<br>
<br>
And then Wednesday night happened. (There was no power and no
Verizon data available at our home -- it was going to be SkyWARN or
bust if I had anything to add, which ultimately I did not.)<br>
<br>

<p class="MsoNormal">I just received a call from Ken Haydu at
NWS. Ken wanted me to pass on to each of you<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">their appreciation for the inputs received
thru the Skywarn network this week.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">He related the following story. On the
second night the cold front met up with the warm front <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">at a boundary along the Ohio river. This
boundary had been set in place by showers and thunderstorms<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">earlier in the day. If you were watching
the radar about 11 PM you may have noticed a line of storms <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">that was perpendicular to the main frontal
line. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Ken said that the office was receiving
Skywarn reports of hail from this area before the radar was <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">even able to identify precipitation. The
line literally ‘blew up’ with indications of rotation. This
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">allowed NWS to issue warnings in a very
timely manner.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Hang in there. This ‘storm’ to shall pass.<o:p></o:p></p>
